Felt and Straw Blocking Workshop - May 30 - June 11

Penland School of Crafts, Penland, North Carolina

Penland School of Crafts is a national center for craft education dedicated to helping people live creative lives. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Penland offers one, two, and eight-week workshops in books & paper, clay, drawing, glass, iron, metals, photography, printmaking and letterpress, textiles and wood. The school also sponsors artists' residencies, community education programs and a craft gallery.

Course Description

Two weeks immersion: block felt and straw hats using traditional hatblocks and freeform methods. Once the felt or straw blank is damp and hot with steam it is quickly “blocked” - pulled-stretched or sculpted onto the wooden hat block. While the materials dry you will learn brim finishes (rolled brim edges, hand-sewn or machine-sewn welts, bias binding or petersham-ribbon edgings) and embellishment and trimming techniques to complete your hats.
